A piece of new merchandise for Avengers Campus was unveiled today, the WEB Shooters. This customizable accessory is intended to work in conjunction with the upcoming Avengers Campus attraction, WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure. By equipping yourself with one of these new devices while riding, you will “power up” your abilities on the interactive attraction for a more customized experience, and possibly a better score. And while the concept sounds intriguing at first, I can’t help but be a little concerned by what is essentially an additional fee needed to get the very most out of the new attraction.
The WEB Shooter and Its Uses
The WEB Shooter is a device worn on your wrist that has an “attraction mode” for use while riding WEB Slingers (there is also a “home mode,” which we will touch on in a moment). There are two types of shooters: an Electro-Dynamic Web-Shooter and a Repulsor Cannon. Both types are worn slightly differently. In the ride, Electro-Dynamic Web-Shooters make your webs electrified. The Repulsor Cannon shoots out powerful energy blasts rather than webs.
These items can be themed to different Marvel heroes as well. The Electro-Dynamic Web-Shooter has Spider-Man and Ghost-Spider options. The Repulsor Cannon offers Iron Man and Rescue as choices.
For the “home mode,” Electro-Dynamic Web-shooters have lights, sounds, and projections, along with a web that ejects and retracts. Repulsor Cannons light up and blast air.
Pay to Play?
These toys sound pretty cool and it is appreciated that there is a play mode for when you are not riding. But these items won’t be cheap, an expensive add-on just to beat the scores of other guests on the ride. Since all guests will have to wait in line to play, is it really fair to offer additional ride features just for those who are willing to pay more? We worry that if these items prove popular, Disney may feel emboldened to start offering on-ride up-charges at other attractions. The price of admission is already expensive, but to then find out that that you will have to pay extra to experience everything an attraction has to offer may end up feeling like an insulting cash-grab to many guests.
I love Disney merchandise. It is a passion of mine. But this is something that rubs me the wrong way. What about you?
