Welcome back to the magic!  While the Anaheim theme parks don’t open officially to the general public until Friday April 30th, Cast Members and their invited guests are getting exclusive previews from April 27th through 29th.  We are very happy to be able to bring you an early first look at Disneyland.  After more than a year since guests were last able to step through those train tunnels into Walt Disney’s original Magic Kingdom, there will be lots to cover.  Join us as we take a look at what’s new and what’s different and everything you’ll need to know before your visit — from operational changes to brand new magic in two classic attractions.

Returning to the Magic

The time has arrived at long last. Disneyland is in the early days of reopening. While the park will be open for Cast Member previews only through Thursday, the park is largely operating as it will on the official opening day, Friday, April 30th, 2021. Arriving at the Resort proved to be a headache for many Cast Members and their guests on Tuesday.  We heard of long wait times to park at the Mickey and Friends parking structure. This is due in large part to new protocols, which those who attended A Touch of Disney will be familiar with.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

In short, Disney is limiting how many cars can enter the structure at any given time, to allow more time for cars to park every-other-space and so that there isn’t a large backup of guests waiting to go through the enhanced security screening.  It’s safer for guests to wait in line in their cars than it is to be dumped into large crowds waiting to go through the temperature and security screenings.   If possible, we highly recommend entering through the Harbor Blvd. pedestrian entrance.  Park at the Anaheim Hotel with the MiceChat discount and walk over — the walk is shorter than the walk from Mickey and Friends to the esplanade, it’ll save you time, and is cheaper than Disney’s parking.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes
There was a long line at the Harbor entry as well on the first day of previews, but once the gates opened, this line moved VERY quickly.

Tuesday’s Cast Member preview day operated with a capacity that we believe was far less than 25%.  Guests visiting Friday should enjoy similar crowd levels and from our experience, they’re in for quite a treat.

Cast Members lined up along Main Street, U.S.A. welcomed us back to the park Tuesday morning; an emotional return to the magic. We can’t count the number of tear-stained faces we saw on the faces of guest and cast alike.

From top to bottom, Disneyland is sparkling.  Disney did an amazing job bringing the park back from its state of controlled decline that it had been surviving in for the better part of the last year.  The park looks remarkably fresh, clean, and ready to go.  A truly stunning job by all involved.

Reimagining a classic: Snow White’s Enchanted Wish

After terrifying children for more than six decades, Disneyland’s classic Snow White’s Scary Adventures attraction has been totally reimagined.  Now named Snow White’s Enchanted Wish, the attraction strips away some of the scary elements of the classic attraction to create a more cohesive retelling of Snow White’s story.  Entering the park, you’ll see the new attraction poster in the entry arch on the right hand side.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

A great deal of work went into the reimagining of the attraction. While many of your favorite early scenes, such as the dwarfs’ cottage, witch transformation, and dwarf mine scenes remain with new enhancements the attraction has been reworked to incorporate more of Snow White’s story, including her “happily ever after,” fixing the abrupt ending the ride has had since it opened.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Outside, the attraction has been repainted in new, brighter hues and light blue accents.

Inside the queue, the dungeon scene is now Snow White’s dimly-lit chamber. Story books throughout the attraction clue you in that you are experiencing specific scenes from the story.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

The ride itself has been thoroughly reimagined, bringing in more of Snow White herself and telling more of her story.  For purists, don’t worry — there’s still plenty of scary to be found alongside beautiful upgrades to the dwarf’s mines, witch’s transformation, and a stunning  all-new happily-ever-after finale sequence.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Going into this, I was very skeptical of making this ride less scary, fearing it would remove some of Disneyland’s unique texture and make it safer for safe’s sake.  Fortunately, the changes here are well-executed and balances some scary scenes with others that are full of magic and whimsy.  The end result is a more balanced experience that blends traditional dark ride techniques with state-of-the-art projections and modern special effects. It’s on-par with the great Alice in Wonderland overhaul from several years ago.  Kudos to the team that oversaw this project.

Making the poison apple… not all of the projection effects are a home run, a prop might have worked better than this projection on a wall for example:

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

But, overall, new projection effects bring extra life — and evil — to scenes like this:

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Instead of the hag emerging from this cave in a boat, offering you an apple, a new magic mirror projection is awkwardly in its place.  This effect just feels out of place and weird but at the same time, the weirdness kind of works.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Snow White bites the apple and the mirror shatters…

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

…and then the dwarfs have to escape being murdered by the evil hag.  This scene was previously the finale scene of the ride before it abruptly proclaimed “and they lived happily ever after.”  It’s been condensed and relocated here and works great.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

And now, Snow White gets a proper finale scene, complete with a kiss from her prince.  The scene is dark when you enter, lit only by the beams of light shining on Snow White but is lit with twinkling lights once the prince kisses her.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

And finally, we see Snow White awake and greeting her prince with her woodland friends.

While Snow White is an original attraction from 1955, it has had quite the transformation already over the years. Please take a look at our in-depth coverage of the new attraction and its history in the park:

Spirited new magic materializes at the Haunted Mansion

In New Orleans Square, Disneyland’s iconic Haunted Mansion has reopened with new enhancements.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

The changes, focused on the attraction’s queue and disability access, folds in new lore and brings back old spirits.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Outside, the spirits have completely re-landscaped the pet cemetery.  The foliage accentuates and relates to each of the deceased pets.

Hidden behind the ghost horse-drawn hearse in front of the Mansion, is the new bird bath that Disney announced. It may seem like a strange location as most guests won’t see it, but it allows disabled guests who use the ramp at the front of the mansion (and who miss the larger Pet Cemetary) to have a bit of the “Tails of woe” experience. Now that’s Disney magic!

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Inside, the Haunted Mansion is running normally, just with a socially-distanced foyer and stretching room.  Parties are grouped together and spread out around the perimeter of the rooms. But you’ll notice some 3D sound from the Ghost Host, moving around the room as he speaks.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

The indoor portion of the queue is cleared before the next stretching room is emptied into the queue. So you won’t end up trapped in a long indoor queue.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

The big changes come after you turn the corner at the end of the Hallway to Limbo.  The attraction’s loading area has been reworked, bringing a more permanent fix to the area after the ADA loading zone was expanded several years ago, requiring additional lighting.  The fix back then brought in a significant number of new lighting fixtures which were themed, but ultimately made the space far brighter than it was ever intended to be.  Now, a new partition directs guests’ attention away from the ADA loading area and its lights and to new theming.  It’s a nice change that’s executed fairly elegantly.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes
New screens on the left, April/December pulls your attention away to the right. An elegant solution.

Photos may make the space look bright, but in person it works well.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

These thematic enhancements include the return of the fan-favorite April/December changing portrait, which once hung in the indoor queue’s Hallway to Limbo.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

This enhanced area ends now at a statue of a cat with one glowing red eye, a nod to a recurring evil one-eyed cat character that was proposed for the Haunted Mansion in its early development, but never made it to the finished attraction. A little tribute to the Mansion’s many die-hard fans.

We invite you to step into the moldering sanctum on the spirit world in our First Look article here:

Meanwhile, the rest of the attraction looks great, with restored lighting throughout, making for a delightfully dark and spooky experience.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Guests may think that the scrims, projected with ghosts, in the graveyard scene have been removed . . . but they’ve just been cleaned or replaced, making them appear invisible as they should have all along.  A HUGE improvement for the visibility of the scene.

Marvelous new Adventures coming June 4

At Disney California Adventure, the brand new Avengers Campus is officially set to open June 4.   The reopening of Disney California Adventure as a theme park allowed for new views of the Avengers Campus from Hollywood Land.  The addition of Avengers Campus will effectively move Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: BREAKOUT! out of Hollywood Land and into the new land.  With this change, Disney has made some enhancements outside of Mission: BREAKOUT.

It’s a really strange thematic solution to explaining just how this building, that’s supposed to be from outer space, has landed here in Avengers Campus.  None of it really makes sense and I suppose in that vein, you really shouldn’t pay too much attention to this inexplicable space goo.  It’s a weird and feature surrounding a weird and inexplicable building, so we’re sure many folks will like it and some will be distracted by it.

Reimagining your Disneyland Visit

A few tips from our experience on the first day of previews:

Tickets and Reservations

You don’t just need a ticket to visit Disneyland, you also need a park reservation for a specific day! Admission alone is no longer enough.  This is going to be a HUGE issue for many guests who just don’t won’t know that reservations are now required. But that’s just one of the many changes you need to know, We have a full guide to help you figure it all out, plus some background on what’s going on behind the scenes at Disneyland (ESSENTIAL READING):

Disneyland Reopening Update – Everything You Need to Know and More

Disney Dining: Mobile Ordering takes over

At dining locations across both theme parks, Disney is now heavily relying on guest utilization of the Mobile Order feature in the official Disneyland app.  You’ll spot signage encouraging the use of Mobile Order throughout the parks.  If you still want to order your food the old fashioned way, you’ll be in for a wait.  Most locations only have one or two traditional cash register ordering stations (or cast with portable tablets), which can lead to long wait times.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

In addition to a heavy push for Mobile Ordering, Disney has also simplified menus as part of its phased reopening.  More complete menus will return in time but for now, some restaurants only offer one or two options.  So be sure to check restaurant menus before trying to order; your old favorites may no longer be available.  Below, Plaza Inn’s only entree currently is its famous fried chicken platter (gone are the salmon, pot roast, Cobb Salad, and most pasta dishes).

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Food at many locations is currently being served in to-go containers only.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

In New Orleans Square, the French Market has one of the larger menus available and is also heavily pushing the Mobile Order option.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

The restaurant’s main entrance is blocked by a Mobile Order pickup window.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Fan favorites like Bengal Barbecue are back but also relying heavily on Mobile Order.

With Disneyland’s cramped dining areas, social distancing has forced Disney to provide overflow dining space throughout the park.  Some areas are nice temporary expansions, while others are simply benches with stickers making them “designated dining areas.”  Below, Jolly Holiday Cafe overflow dining takes over Main Street walkways.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

In New Orleans Square, you can grab a table with a riverfront view, but not always with shade (wear sunscreen).

Just having a quick snack?  There are plenty of benches around the park which have been “Designated for dining.” Intended to provide a spot for guests to drink a beverage or have a snack (you can’t walk around and eat).

Crowds & Queues: Navigating socially-distanced parks

Of course, Disney is strictly enforcing social distancing rules.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

In queues, Cast Members will remind you to stand where appropriate, should you forget.  So for the safety of all, be sure to stay alert and aware of the safety markers on the ground.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Speaking of queues, expect to see large overflow queues in places where you’re used to lining up in tight outdoor queues.  In New Orleans Square, in particular, both Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion saw their queues take over much of the outdoor walkways.  Don’t let this scare you, though.  Lines for attractions tended to move quickly on Tuesday, even if the line looks super long — social distancing is making it seem worse than it actually is (6′ between parties instead of just inches as it was in the past).

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

It’ll be interesting to see how Disneyland manages these long, winding, socially-distant queues once they begin to scale up capacity numbers.  Even with well below the 25% capacity limit on Tuesday, New Orleans Square was almost out of space with both overflow dining areas and overflow queues taking up most walkways.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Although the park felt positively empty most of the day, loooooooong lines formed on Main Street for shops once the park closed at 7 p.m.  If you want to buy some souvenirs, we recommend hitting the shops at some point during the day when lines are short or non-existent.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes
This is a queue for the Candy Palace around the corner!

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

In general, if you want to visit but are still anxious about being in big crowds, we’d recommend leaving before park closing to avoid Main Street around closing time.

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

We’re not really sure what Disney could do here to help ease crowds on Main Street at closing; it simply is what it is.  Perhaps opening the overflow corridors behind Main Street would help but that may not be possible due to not having the staffing available to manage crowd flow in those corridors. But an expansion of park hours would certainly help some as folks will tire out and leave earlier on their own. 10 hours is just a bit too short of a day, especially for Disneyland. Perhaps Disneyland could operate a 12 hour day and California Adventure could continue to operate a 10 hour day (there’s just a lot less to see at DCA).

, Disneyland is Back! — FIRST LOOK at New Magic and Big Changes

Socially-Distanced Character Greetings

Due to social distancing and health safety protocols, character meet and greets are on hold.  In their place, characters make appearances throughout the parks from various locations where guests can snap selfies from afar.  Disney tested these socially-distanced character greetings in Disney California Adventure during the recent A Touch of Disney events.  During those events, characters were often placed very far away from guests, hurting the experience.  Disney has taken notes on this and character greetings in both parks are much better crafted now, allowing for more guest interaction with characters as well as just making it easier to snap a selfie with your favorite character.
