It’s been a long time since D23 changed up its membership tiers. Today, Disney’s official fan club unwrapped plans to end their “Gold Family” membership plan and will replace it with a more flexible “Gold Duo” option.

, CHANGES: D23 Swaps “Gold Family” for “Gold Duo” – Here’s What That Means

Gold Family was a great idea as it allowed each family to have one Disney Twenty Three Magazine but access to events for multiple family members. Unfortunately, the primary cardholder had to be one of the people to attend any event the other members also wanted to attend. That inflexibility created lots of scheduling difficulties for many would-be event attendees. It also created issues of whom you consider family.

Like Gold Family, Gold Duo will receive just one member gift for the membership.

The new Gold Duo membership tier seeks to fix those issues by offering two cardholders (who do not need to be family). As a result, one cardholder can attend the event (and usually bring one or more guests) without the other needing to also attend. And with two cardholders who can each bring guests to events, that doubles the number of potential guests a duo can bring (waiting to see how this one will play out at future events).

One Disney Twenty Three magazine for the membership. If you need more magazines, you should each sign up on the individual Gold membership option.

The old Gold Family option will remain available through December of 2020. Gold Family members will be able to upgrade to Gold Duo at no additional cost.

Here’s how Disney describes the new Gold Membership Duo Plan:

Starting on January 1, 2021, the new D23 Gold Membership Duo Plan will provide the benefits of a D23 Gold Membership with the opportunity to add a second D23 Gold Member (called an “affiliate” member) for the same price as a D23 Gold Family Membership. That means Gold Members on the Duo Plan will receive two D23 Gold Memberships including two personalized certificates, two member cards, and access for each D23 Gold Member to participate in a variety of D23-exclusive experiences, including shopping opportunities and Gold Member events*. The Gold Membership Duo Plan also includes one annual Gold Member Collector Set and one annual subscription (four issues) to the Disney twenty-three publication, each sent to the primary member on the account.

The best news? You won’t have to wait until your renewal date to take advantage of this new membership plan. Starting in January 2021, current D23 Gold Family Members will have the opportunity to transition at no additional cost to the D23 Gold Membership Duo Plan through the remainder of their current Gold Family Membership term, and automatically** renew to the Gold Duo Plan annually thereafter. Current D23 Gold Members also can upgrade for a fee to the Gold Duo Plan starting in January 2021.
