The Walt Disney Company announced that a contemporary remake of the 1997 Halloween classic “Under Wraps” has been greenlit, which will begin production in Vancouver this month and will wrap in December. “Under Wraps” was the first-ever Disney Channel Original Movie, a blockbuster franchise that jump-started made-for-TV movies for the cable channel.

The new film will follow three 12-year-old friends who discover a mummy in a neighbor’s basement and accidentally revive him a few days before Halloween. They affectionately call him “Harold” and protect their newfound friend from a band of criminals who want to capture the mummy and sell him to the highest bidder.

Christian J. Simon (“Sydney to the Max”), Malachi Barton (“Stuck in the Middle”), Sophia Hammons (“The Social Dilemma”) and Phil Wright (“Disney Fam Jam”) are set to star in the remake.

The original “Under Wraps” was released in 1997 as the Disney Channel’s first Halloween-themed film, and premiered as a Halloween comedy. It starred Mario Yedidia as Marshall, Adam Wylie as Gilbert, Clara Bryant as Amy, Ken Campbell as Bruce, Ed Lauter as Mr. Kubat and Bill Fagerbakke as Harold the Mummy. Animation aficionados will recognize Fagerbakke as the voice of Patrick Star from “SpongeBob Squarepants.”

The original “Under Wraps” was a ratings success when it was first released and paved the way for more made-for-TV movies for the Disney Channel.

“‘Under Wraps’ introduced a generation of kids and families to what has become the backbone of our programming across the globe: Disney Channel Original Movies,” said Lauren Kisilevsky, vice president, Original Movies, Disney Channel. “We are excited to welcome our audience back into the Halloween spirit and celebrate the unlikely friendship between three kids and a mummy as they embark on an adventure and ultimately save the day.”

Alex Zamm will direct, who also co-wrote the screenplay with William Robertson (“Inspector Gadget 2,” “Woody Woodpecker”). Zamm has previously directed movies for Disney before including “Inspector Gadget 2” and “Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2,” both of which were released straight to home video.

“Under Wraps” is slated for a 2021 premiere on the Disney Channel.
