Disney+ is beefing up its feature slate with acquisitions of films already completed. The streamer announced that a contemporary adaptation of Anna Sewell’s classic 19th-century novel, “Black Beauty” will premiere on Disney+ later this year.

In the new iteration of the 1877 novel by English author Anna Sewell, Black Beauty, a wild mustang born free in the American West, is captured and taken away from her family. Her story intertwines with that of 17-year old Jo Green, who is similarly grieving over the loss of her parents. The two slowly forge a bond that is built on love, respect, and mutual healing.

Oscar-winner Kate Winslet (“The Reader”) provides the voice of Black Beauty, and Mackenzie Foy  (“Interstellar” and Disney’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms”) portrays Green. Also in the cast are Iain Glen (“Game of Thrones”) as John Manly, and Claire Forlani (“Meet Joe Black”) as Mrs. Winthorp.

“Black Beauty” is directed by Ashley Avis (“Adolescence”) who also wrote the screenplay. The family-friendly story is a perfect fit for the Disney streaming platform and provides new content for its audience.

Increasing The Feature Film Library

Disney+’s acquisition of “Black Beauty” bolsters the feature offerings from the streamer. With theaters closed and production in Hollywood being at a standstill due to pandemic concerns, Disney+ has had to use other resources to bring original content to the platform.

“Black Beauty” marks the second feature acquisition for Disney+. Produced in Montreal, “Clouds” is the first narrative film acquisition from the Disney+ Global Content team. Based on the life of Zach Sobiech, the Minnesota teenager who wrote the hit song “Clouds,” the teen drama stars Fin Argus, Sabrina Carpenter, and Madison Iseman, and will premiere later this year.

Zach Sobiech, who died from a rare form of bone cancer in 2013, became a sensation after a video of him performing the song “Clouds” went viral on the internet.

Disney+ Originals and The Emmys

On the series side, the streamer has had some success delivering new content. Season two of Jon Favreau’s Star Wars-themed “The Mandalorian” will premiere in October 2020, and an original Untitled Marvel series will drop later this year.

In addition to accolades from critics and viewers, “The Mandalorian” garnered 15 of Disney+’s 19 Emmy nominations. Some of these include outstanding drama series, visual effects, sound mixing, and stunt coordination. On the acting front, it also secured nominations for outstanding character voiceover performance for Taika Waititi as IG-11, and Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon for outstanding guest actor in a drama series.

Its 15 nominations give “The Mandalorian” the distinction of being the most nominated debut series of 2019 for a streaming service.

Other Disney+ programs received nominations as well. “Forky Asks a Question” secured a nomination for short-form animated program and “The World According to Jeff Goldblum” received a nod for outstanding hosted nonfiction series. Angela Bassett secured a nomination for outstanding narrator in “The Imagineering Story,” and the hairstyling team from “A Celebration of the Music From Coco” received a nomination for contemporary hairstyling for a variety, nonfiction or reality program.
