Black Is King, a film by Beyoncé | Streaming Exclusively July 31 on Disney+

The film will premiere on Disney+, two weeks after the one-year anniversary of the live-action “The Lion King’s” theatrical release. “Black Is King” reimagines the lessons of “The Lion King” for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns.

According to a news release by Disney+ and Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment, the film meshes a tale of a young king’s transcendent journey through betrayal, love, and self-identity.

The visual album is described by Disney as a “celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience” and “an affirmation of a grand purpose, with lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture. The film highlights the beauty of tradition and Black excellence.”

Filmed in various locations, the cinematography captures people and landscapes across continents, starting in New York, then Los Angeles, South Africa, West Africa, London, and Belgium.

“I wanted to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy,” Beyoncé wrote on Instagram. “I spent a lot of time exploring and absorbing the lessons of past generations and the rich history of different African customs.”

An All-Star Cast

The film will also star the artists featured on the album, along with some “special guest appearances.” They include models Aweng Ade-Chuol and Adut Akech, supermodel Naomi Campbell, Tina Knowles-Lawson, author and Academy Award-winning actor Lupita Nyong’o, singer Kelly Rowland, Pharrell Williams and Jay-Z, among others.

A celebratory memoir for the world on the black experience, “Black Is King” includes full-length videos for the songs “Already,” “Brown Skin Girl,” “Mood 4 Eva” and “My Power,” which is heard in the new trailer.

Black is King arrives exclusively on Disney+, July 31st.
