It’s been almost four months since there’s been any guest activity at Downtown Disney. The shopping area of the Disneyland Resort opened for castmember previews on July 8th and to the general public on July 9th. But don’t expect to breeze in and out like you would in the past; things are operating much differently than in the past, and not everything is open at the moment. Here’s the info you need to know about visiting Downtown Disney as well as what’s open and closed.

This article has been updated with new photos from the Cast Member preview on July 8 and the official opening day on July 9th.

Let’s join the crowd and see what a visit to Downtown Disney was like on reopening day.

Downtown Disney Shopping Updates

There have been a few operational updates to shopping at Downtown Disney. Here’s an overview of the changes:

  • Mobile Wait List: Some of the locations at Downtown Disney (including World of Disney and Marceline’s Confectionery) will be using a mobile waitlist system as needed to manage the number of guests inside the location. Guests can provide their name and phone number to receive a text message when they’re able to return and shop.
  • New Product Launches: While there is still new merchandise being released at the Downtown Disney District, in an effort to reduce overcrowding, monthly program releases and limited-edition merchandise will not be available for in-person purchases until further notice. Guests can visit Disney’s Merchandise Events page for more info, and shop online (including for limited-edition merchandise) at shopDisney.

  • Dressing Rooms: For the time being, dressing rooms will not be available for use.
  • Returns: Upon the reopening of merchandise locations, eligible returns and exchanges will be accepted at the World of Disney store, as well as the other Disney-owned and -operated locations in the Downtown Disney District, subject to the returns and exchange policy. 3rd party operators may have different policies.

Downtown Disney Hours of Operation

Hours of operation for Downtown Disney will be 10am until 8pm daily for the time being. (Subject to change)

Where to Park for Downtown Disney

Don’t go to the parking structure!!! Downtown Disney parking will be located in the Simba lot, located behind the Paradise Pier Hotel. Keep your eyes open for signage pointing you to the entrance. Parking will be free for the time being, no need to get a validation.

Know Before You Go

Before arriving at Downtown Disney, it’s a good idea to check your temperature and the temperature of everyone in your party. If your temp is over 100.4, stay home. Guests will be screened at Downtown Disney bag check and those with a fever will be turned away.

New signage will direct guests to the entrance Downtown Disney, and also the new temperature check station.

Temperature checks are conducted with a touchless thermometer. Any guests with a temperature of 100.4 F or higher will not be allowed entry.

After your temperature check, you’ll be sniffed by a dog. . . yes, you read that correctly. They’ve added a K9 screening step.

Bag check is similar to before, but a plexiglass screen has been added between you and the security screener.

And there’s still a metal detector to walk through as well.

Guests are required to wear a mask, encouraged to keep a distance of at least 6 feet from other guests, use contactless payments whenever possible, and frequently wash their hands. Here’s some more of what guests should be aware of before visiting.

After passing through the temperature screening and bag check, there is a noticeboard informing guests of health and safety protocols required for malls and destination shopping centers.

Around Downtown Disney, there are newly installed handwashing stations.  They aren’t connected to water lines and need to be filled periodically.

Downtown Disney is taking social distancing seriously with the utilization of distancing markers, along with a Cast Member to designate the end of the queue.

But be warned that the lines can be long at times. Just after opening on the 9th, the World of Disney had a line that stretched from the front of the store (near the Starbucks) all the way to the ticket booths by Harbor Blvd and back again!  INSANE.  But by 11am, the line had become more manageable, though guests were left waiting in the full sun.

For the preview day, attendance was fairly light. However, it got much busier for the public opening on the 9th. A massive crowd arrived before the shopping district even opened. That created a less than safe situation where hundreds of people lined up without social distancing waiting for their turn to be admitted into Downtown Disney.

Without the taped lines on the ground, folks don’t do a good job distancing.
Downtown Disney, Downtown Disney – What’s Open and What’s Still Closed
But folks generally do a pretty good job when they do see markers on the ground.

Once inside, things got much better. But, still, folks do a much better job of social distancing where there are lines on the ground than they do when just walking around on their own.  In short, no markers = poor distancing.  Hopefully, Disney learns this lesson quickly.

As seen earlier above, World of Disney staff is taking social distancing seriously by limiting the number of guests inside the location. You’ll still encounter pockets of guests congregating around popular items, we heard no announcements reminding guests to keep a safe distance. So you’ll have to fend for yourself.

Here’s What’s Still Closed in Downtown Disney

For the time being, there’s a handful of restaurants that aren’t operating. These locations may be closed due to a lack of patio seating, or simply could be waiting to open at a later date.

There are also a few attractions closed at Downtown Disney as well. The popular Virtual Reality attraction, The VOID has been evicted. Additionally, bowling at Splitsville Luxury Lanes is temporarily unavailable. We might speculate on venues that might never reopen. Downtown Disney is a high rent mall. Venues that weren’t performing well, such as Splitsville, may not survive if they reopen at all.

The VOID is closed for good. Those distancing lines you see in front of it are for the Disney Home Store.

Downtown Disney is reopening in phases, and more restaurants and attractions will open at a later date. Still, most of the shopping district will be open for you now!
