Earlier this month, Disney made the announcement that the action-adventure film based on the best-selling young adult book Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer would be skipping theaters for Disney+. The film was originally scheduled to premiere in August 2019, but then was pushed back to May 29, 2020, before being scheduled for streaming. Disney may be betting that Artemis Fowl will bring more subscribers to Disney+. Disney has announced that Artemis Fowl will debut June 12 on the streaming service.
Strategizing in the Digital Landscape
The addition of new content to Disney+, like the runaway hit The Mandalorian, has helped the streaming platform maintain its customer base and adding new subscribers at a rapid pace. As parents look for ways to entertain homebound children, Disney+ benefitted from the early releases of Frozen 2 and Onward. Adding new titles like Artemis Fowl will help beef up the streamer’s library for subscribers.
Disney+ Surpasses 50 million Subscribers 4 Years Ahead of Schedule
Amid theaters being shuttered over the current health crisis, Disney postponed nearly every one of its upcoming movie releases, including Black Widow, Mulan, Soul, The Eternals, Jungle Cruise, Raya and the Last Dragon and Indiana Jones 5.
Artemis Fowl a New Kind of Hero
Descended from a long line of criminal masterminds, 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl finds himself in a battle of strength and cunning against a hidden race of all-powerful fairies in a perilous war of wits.
“Artemis Fowl is a true original. In challenging times, a twelve-year-old criminal mastermind is one heck of a traveling companion. Smart, funny, and cool as mustard, he’ll take you to new worlds, meet unforgettable characters, and mix magic with mayhem,” said director Kenneth Branagh. “His own family is everything to him, and (although he’d never admit it), he’d be as proud as I am that families around the world will now be able to enjoy his first amazing screen adventures together, on Disney +.”

Artemis Fowl stars newcomer Ferdia Shaw in the title role alongside Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Josh McGuire, Nikesh Patel and Adrian Scarborough, with Colin Farrell and Judi Dench.
Kenneth Branagh, p.g.a., directs and produces with Judy Hofflund, p.g.a., with Angus More Gordon and Matthew Jenkins serving as executive producers. Conor McPherson and Hamish McColl wrote the screenplay.
Disney also dropped a new trailer to promote the film’s June 12 premiere:
