The Aulani Resort in Honolulu, Hawaii, was the last Disney property in the world to close. The beautiful Ko Olina beach resort closed on Tuesday last week (March 24th, 2020) “out of an abundance of caution for its guests and cast members,” and new state mandatory quarantine orders for anyone entering the state.

What was it like on the last day of operation? And when will Aulani reopen? Thanks to MiceChat reader Justin Greiwe (@greiwefamilytravels), we have final day photos and thoughts!

The Last Day in Paradise

The resort was a complete ghost town on Sunday and Monday, leading up to the resort’s closure at 5PM on Tuesday.

The sit-down restaurants and bar lounges were closed and blocked off from guests.

The two take-away food locations were only open for dinner. These were limited to 10 guests at a time, but only a few guests were around anyway.

There were some food items to be found in the gift shops.

We enjoyed a final Dole Whip… who’s heading straight to Adventureland as soon as the parks re-open?!

Very few people were occupying the pool and beach areas…

Even Mickey Mouse wandered the pool areas on the last day, searching for guests to say hello to. But there was no one in sight! A sad, but appropriate, Disney farewell.

With no visitors to entertain, what’s a mouse to do? Time to shelter in place with Pluto.

While these vistas are absolutely breathtaking, it was rather eerie without any other guests around; especially with the Hawaiian music gently playing in the background.

At the end of the last day, cast members cleared, stacked and stored beach chairs and umbrellas in preparation for the resort to close.

When Will Aulani Reopen?

Upon speaking to several Aulani cast members, our reader was told the resort was expected to only be closed through April 1st. However, Disney now expects the resort to remain closed until further notice.

The State of Hawaii and Oahu County have a Shelter in Place order which is effective through April 30th. The state also has a 2-week required quarantine for all inbound flights through April 30th.

So, the short answer is that the resort won’t reopen before May 1st, but could remain closed longer than that. In fact, Aulani is not accepting reservations before June 1st and has an offer for up to 30% off for the first two weeks of June. So that may be the date they are shooting for, same date that Disneyland and Walt Disney World are using as well.
