Disney characters unite to fight the forces of evil! In the new mobile turn-based role playing game (RPG), Disney Sorcerer’s Arena, you’re able to do just that. You’ll team up with Mickey, Ariel, Sulley, Aladdin, and many more Disney animated favorites. Glu Mobile’s new title brings Disney characters from every era into a class-style RPG. If you’re a big mobile gamer and happen to be a Disney fan, this will be a treat.

Sorcerer’s Arena Gameplay

If you’ve played a turn-based RPG, especially in the mobile space, you’ll be very comfortable with this game. There’s a handy tutorial that takes you through the first part of the campaign missions, explaining what everything is and how it works. During your turn, you can attack, do a special move, or cast a spell (and the enemy can do the same). Every character has different abilities and specialties, so collecting a balanced team is the key. Let’s take a look at the characters. There are quite a few…

Characters in Sorcerer’s Arena

Currently, there are 66 unlockable characters in Sorcerer’s Arena. You unlock them by playing the game and receiving tokens. Once you have enough tokens you can spend them to unlock a character for your team. Each character has all kinds of unlockables like equipment, abilities, levels, and promotions.

Something I find really interesting about this game are the choices of characters. The level of obscurity goes pretty deep with some of them. For example, check out the Horned King from oft-forgotten The Black Cauldron.

Secondly, villains like the Horned King make for an interesting mashup. Your team can consist of both heroes and villains, we even noticed some characters being more effective if you have their counterpart. For example, Aladdin’s attacks can be joined by Jasmine if they’re on the same team.

Sorcerer’s Arena Spells

Spells are an extra move you can cast from any of your turns, and they’ve all got a little Disney magic. Just like the rest of the game, there are a lot of fun obscure references. We thought this Splash Mountain spell was particularly interesting (and it kind of reminds us of the attraction-themed summons from Kingdom Hearts III).

Our favorite spell is “Dad Moves,” with Ian and Barley’s dad’s legs dancing so bad that it makes opponents skip a turn. If you haven’t seen the hilarious scene fro Onward this spell is inspired by, the film is available on Disney+ right now.

Clubs, Quests, and PvP in Sorcerer’s Arena

Beyond the standard campaign, there are a handful of options to expand gameplay. There are a few quests that will net you specific rewards towards something (the day we tried it was towards getting Darkwing Duck). Events are similar but run for a limited time. Right now they’re running an Aladdin-themed event that earns rewards towards classic Aladdin characters.

You can join a club (we made a MiceChat one for the first 50 players that want to join). It seems it’s the best way to organize players and there’s a nice request system for help from club members. There’s also a built-in club versus club battle mode where you can play against other players, but you can also play against individual players as well (commonly known as PvP, “player versus player”).

Our Thoughts on Sorcerer’s Arena

All in all, the game is a fun turn-based RPG with a Disney theme. It’s not reinventing the wheel and has things to do for both the casual and serious gamer. If you’re like us, you’ll appreciate the extent of the Disney references. We even enjoyed the music. In fact, the menu music sounds like a fantasy version of the Soarin’ theme. The game has more than enough Disney references and characters to keep fans of the movies and parks engaged. It’s at least worth your time while you are stuck at home. And if you do decide to play, join the MiceChat Club, we’ll see you there!
