With every Disney Park in the world closed, we’re all scrambling to find a way to scratch that Disney itch from the safety of our homes. I’ve found comics to be a great way to transport myself into the magical worlds of Disney without needing to get off the couch (hello, pajama pants!). While the Disney comics on this list may be mostly unfamiliar to you, they’re here for a reason: they’re great reads! And the good news is that nearly every book on this list is also available in a digital format so you can get to reading instantly. So, without further ado, let’s get these pages turning!

1. Gravity Falls: Lost Legends: 4 All-New Adventures!

top disney comics, Top Five Disney Comics Most Folks Don’t Know About
Written By Alex Hirsch. Illustrated by Asaf Hanuka, Dana Terrace, Ian Worrel, Jacob Chabot, Jim Campbell, Joe Pitt, Kyle Smeallie, Meredith Gran, Mike Holmes, Priscilla Tang, Serina Hernandez, Stephanie Ramirez, and Valerie Halla.

If you are anything like me, you finished watching the series finale of Gravity Falls (what a roller coaster!) and then almost immediately went into withdrawals. I know a lot of fans desperately hoping for one more season of the show or maybe even a movie, but trust me when I tell you that this comic is the next best thing. It is essentially four new episodes in book form, each with a slightly different art style (my guess is different artists took turns as lead). And the writing is just like in the show, so it feels like you’re watching another episode. You can very easily imagine each line in the character’s voice.

The tales are curated by Shmebulock, the gnome who (normally) can only say his name, but he makes an exception for the book. The first chapter is “Face It,” where Pacifica’s quest to erase her first facial blemish leads her to summon a monster using one of the Journals. Things don’t work out as planned, of course, and Mabel’s face is stolen instead. Chapter two, “Comix Up,” is a fun one because it changes the style of comic used multiple times as the gang attempt to rescue Stan from a cursed comic book. “Don’t Dimension It” is the third chapter and follows Mabel’s attempt to escape an alternate dimension filled with different variants of her (like Table Mabel and Explainbel). The fourth and final chapter, “The Jersey Devils in the Details” is my favorite (note: the chapter is called “The Pines Bros Mystery” in the table of contents). It’s a look into Stan and Ford’s past as the pair attempt to find to track down the Jersey Devil in hopes of clearing Stan’s name for stealing jewelry.

Gravity Falls: Lost Legends is available on Amazon in Hardcover ($10.99) and Kindle ($14.99).

2. The Haunted Mansion

Story by Joshua Williamson. Art by Jorge Coelho.

The Haunted Mansion is a Disney Kingdoms comic book series (the link provided leads to a compilation of all five issues). And if you are craving a piece of the Parks, you’ll find it here. There are characters and scenes from every part of the attraction. And those who are more familiar with the ride will catch a good portion of the Ghost Host’s spiel sprinkled into the dialogue. There is even a nod to Haunted Mansion Holiday! If you love riding The Haunted Mansion, you are going to enjoy reading this.

The story follows Danny, a teen who loses his grandfather. He is lured into the Mansion by Madame Leota who claims his grandfather’s ghost is trapped within its walls. Danny must muster all his courage to overcome the curse inflicted on the Mansion by the ghost of a pirate captain.

The Haunted Mansion comics collection is available on Amazon in Hardcover ($44.70) or if you’re looking for just the Haunted Mansion comic, you can find it for Kindle & on comiXology ($4.49).

3. Disney Princess Comic Strips: The Enchanted Collection

By Amy Mebberson.

If you are a fan of Disney-inspired art, there is a good chance that you have seen Amy Mebberson’s work. She’s also the creator of the Disney Princess Comics Strips. The Enchanted Collection is a compilation of comic book issues #1 through #14. They show a funny side of the princesses’ lives. Some are laugh-out-loud funny while others put a smile on your face. All of them are worth a read.

The Disney Princess Comics Enchanted Collection is available on Amazon in Paperback ($22.88).

4. Star Wars: The Legends of Luke Skywalker

The Legends of Luke Skywalker is a manga (Japanese comic). It is a compilation of works by several high-profile artists and all based on stories found in Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi by Ken Liu. I wrote a review on the four stories found within: The Starship Graveyard, I, Droid, The Tale of Lugubrious Mote, and Big Inside. You can read that review by following the link below.

5. Disney Kilala Princess

Story by Rika Tanaka. Art by Nao Kodaka.

Kilala Princess is another manga. The series is five volumes (the links provided lead to volume one). It does a great job of incorporating Disney Princesses into the Japanese magical girl (mahou shoujo) genre. The art style is expectedly cute and it is fun to see the original characters mingle with the classic Disney ones.

The manga is centered around a girl named Kilala who ends up with an enchanted tiara after awakening a sleeping prince. Through the tiara’s power, Kilala visits the worlds of Ariel, Cinderella, Snow White, Jasmine, Belle, and Aurora in hopes of saving the land of Paradiso from disaster. If you are a fan of the (fabulous) video game series, Kingdom Hearts, the progression of the story will feel familiar.

You can find Disney Manga: Kilala Princess Volume 1 on Amazon in Paperback ($6.99) and available on Kindle ($2.55)
