Starting tomorrow (March 14th) the Disneyland Resort will be closing its doors to guests due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Thankfully Disney has pledged to continue paying its Cast Members while the temporary closure is in place. But what happens to the perishable food items that are sold in both parks?
Instead of letting those items go to waste, Disney will be donating all perishable food items to the Second Harvest Food Bank located in Orange County. While the shutdown will come at a massive cost to Disney, it’s good that there are still ways for them to support the local community.
Food safety is important, and Disney is taking proper measures to ensure that the food is ready for donation. Items such as dairy, fruit, vegetables, and packaged goods will be sent to Second Harvest, which fights hunger in Orange County.
While complete closure of the resort is something Disney is not very familiar with, food donations aren’t uncommon. Since 2014 Disney has been donating unused food within the Orange County community and donated over 20,000 meals in 2019. Not only does this help those in need, but also reduces environmental waste that a shut-down of this size could cause.
With a major Food and Wine festival well underway, the size of the Disney donation is going to be considerable. Similarly, Walt Disney World will also be donating perishable items.
