It’s springtime and The Happiest Place on Earth is about to reopen for the first time in over a year. That calls for a celebration. But even if you can’t make it to Disneyland in person just yet, there is a way to bring a colorful part of the park to your own home… plant its signature rose in your garden!
Disneyland is full of fabulous flowers. In fact, more than 3,000 species of plants indigenous to 40 nations grow at the Disneyland Resort. But one type of rose holds a special place in my heart, the Disneyland Rose!
Celebrating the Disneyland Rose
In 2001, Disneyland Resort’s Horticulture Team reached out to a company that’s been growing roses since the late 1800s, Jackson & Perkins, to find a rose worthy of the park’s 50th anniversary. What they came up with is an exquisite Floribunda rose bush with a light, spicy scent that’s covered in peachy-apricot-orange-yellow-and-pink blooms from early to late summer. Floribunda-style roses are known for a long blooming period and large clusters of flowers. The Disneyland Floribunda Rose lives up to that and then some. Today you can find it growing – and thriving – in many areas of the Disneyland Resort.
Growing the Disneyland Rose at Home
The good news is, Jackson & Perkins sells this rose on their website and will ship it throughout the U.S. in Spring at the correct time for each planting zone (the rose is temporarily sold out at the time of publication). Many local garden centers also sell the Disneyland Rose. But this is a very popular variety, so you might wish to call ahead to see if they have them in stock.
This rose bush works well in small areas since it only grows about 30” tall and 24” wide, can be planted in containers, and makes a great cut flower. If you’re in a warmer climate you’ll be happy to hear it’s heat tolerant as well.
In times like these, it’s comforting to have this little piece of Disneyland right in my own garden. I can’t help but think of my favorite place every time I see it bloom!
