The Mandalorian’s terrific Chapter 7 created quite a cliffhanger. As a result, there are a few story threads that may or may not be resolved by the time we reach the end of next week’s season finale. Here are some of the questions we hope will be answered—or, at the very least, tantalizingly teased for Season 2.

(This post includes many spoilers for Chapter 7 – You have been warned!)

Who is Moff Gideon, and what does he want with Baby Yoda?

The character played by Giancarlo Esposito only appears at the very end of Chapter 7, but it becomes clear that he has been the one pulling the strings all along, more than “the client” played by Werner Herzog. He speaks mysteriously to the Mandalorian about Baby Yoda that “you may think you have some idea what you are in possession of, but you do not.” So what exactly is the goal in acquiring the cute little critter with plenty of power in The Force? Is it specific, like the healing powers we see him employ earlier in the episode? Or does Gideon intend to use that power to wider effect, like cloning or otherwise using him to help bring back the Empire?

How are Mando, Cara Dune and Greef Karga getting out of this one?

As the episode ends, we see our protagonists pinned down by a squad of Stormtroopers in a scene reminiscent of the end of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Maybe they’ll shoot their way out somehow and launch their own rescue mission. Or perhaps that time-tested Star Wars tactic of letting yourself be captured/pretend to be captured—already employed in this episode—will be the way that Mando & company get to where they need to be to get Baby Yoda back.

Who was that bent over the body of Fennec Shand at the end of Chapter 5?

How soon we forget: The mysterious cloaked figure who appeared in the last moments of that episode still hasn’t been definitively identified. Online speculation has run from another Mandalorian (specifically Boba Fett) to the possibility that it was our first glimpse of Moff Gideon himself. But that was quite a teaser to be left out there with no clear resolution.

The Mandalorian

Will any other familiar faces re-appear?

Chapter 7 turned into a reunion of many of the faces we’d been introduced to throughout the series’ previous episodes: the Ugnaught Kuiil (Nick Nolte), Cara Dune (Gina Carano), IG-11 (Taika Waititi), Greef Karka (Carl Weathers). It’s not clear if any other favorites are likely to turn up before the end of the season, but I certainly wouldn’t mind another visit with Amy Sedaris’ maternally-minded mechanic Peli Motto.

Will Chapter 8 tie up the Baby Yoda storyline, or carry it over into Season 2?

Baby Yoda has been such a sensation that it’s now hard to imagine the show without him. But perhaps it would be better for each season to be a self-contained story with a resolution, and allow Season 2 to be its own thing with a fresh start. Realistically speaking, the show will build more off-season interest by leaving some kind of cliffhanger, whether Baby Yoda-related or not, so it will be interesting to see what Jon Favreau and the rest of the creative team have in mind for the future of the show.
