It’s almost time to ride the revamped version of Disneyland’s Snow White. Her former “Scary Adventures” are now an “Enchanted Wish,” which foretells how the attraction has been changed during the long theme park closure.  Join us for the tale of how this attraction has changed over the years and what Imagineers have in store for guests on April 30th when the park, and this attraction, reopen.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We’ve made some updates to this article to include new photos, information, and video from the Imagineers. We look forward to hearing your thoughts about the changes to this classic Disneyland attraction…

We’ve long felt that the scariest ride at Disneyland isn’t the Haunted Mansion, it’s Snow White. “Scary” is even in the full title. But it wasn’t always that way.  When the park opened in 1955, the attraction was called “Snow White and Her Adventures.” The ride also cast you, the guest, as Snow White. So when the Evil Queen tries to kill Snow, it’s YOU she’s coming after.

In 1983 the attraction was refreshed with revised show scenes that added Snow White figures and changed the title to “Snow White’s Scary Adventures” to warn guests about what they were about to experience.

As Disneyland’s only princess-themed ride, it might be a little too dark. In fact, it has a scary and abrupt ending where the witch drops a boulder on your head. A simple sign as you exit reads “And they all lived happily after,” without any explanation of how that would happen after your brutal attack.

For Disneyland’s 55th anniversary, a plan was hatched to enhance the Fantasyland attractions with new magic. One of the rides which eventually got some of those enhancements was Snow White. Projection mapping was added to make walls change colors and make it appear that it was raining in the grand finale (where the witch attacks you).  But all the changes succeeded in doing was making the attraction even scarier, without resolving any of the story problems.

New projection mapping adds color and drama to several scenes of the attraction.

Well, that’s about to change.  A slightly brighter version of the attraction is on the way on April 30th, 2021 when Disneyland finally reopens. While most scenes will remain the same, there will be at least two revised scenes, including the problematic ending.

Lighting and projection mapping enhancements, as well as new music, will make the attraction less dark. Snow White herself will have a scene showing that she’s waking from her slumber. And in the end, Snow White will be reunited with her forest friends, her shimmering castle in the distance.

But it’s not just the inside being reworked, the exterior will also be revised to give it more of a princess fairytale look tying into the nearby Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Updates December 21st, 2020: Snow White’s Scary Adventures will officially be called “Snow White’s Enchanted Wish” when it reopens to guests on April 30th, 2021.
