The next major project at Disneyland has begun. Backstage buildings, including most of the ToonTown hills have been removed to make way for Mickey and Minnie’s Runnaway Railway attraction. Although construction inside the land has not yet begun, guests visiting ToonTown will notice that something looks a little different.
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway started construction on Thursday night primarily backstage, removing a segment of the rolling ToonTown hills. The attraction is set to open in 2022
This attraction is based on the version opening next spring at Disney Hollywood Studios in Orlando. Guests will enter where the Gag Factory is currently located.
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be the first major Mickey-themed ride-through attraction. It will utilize a trackless ride system and promises state-of-the-art special effects and technology to bring the cartoon world to life. The original story will be complemented with a “loveable” theme song, according to Disney.
We’ve got a ways to go before we see any concrete details about what’s happening on the construction front, but we’re excited to get this show on the (rail)road! Are you ready for a new ToonTown attraction?
The vehicle was showcased during the D23 Expo in August.
