Hello, boys and ghouls! Are you in the mood for Halloween yet? My daughter Alice and I will be taking a trip to a lil resort called Disney World, but we’ll be back just in time for tricks and treats. We’re even dressing up for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. But that’s not why you are here . . . you want the rumors . . . so let’s get right to it!

, Fab Disney Rumors: WDW’s Tomorrowland to Become “Sci-Fi Land”?

Poor Tomorrowland at Walt Disney World. Ever since the not-so-nifty nineties, it’s had an identity crisis. The Carousel of Progress was no longer about ‘tomorrow’ and has been in need of a serious update. Aliens drooling on guests was seen as too scary and replaced by a chili dog belching Stitch, which itself was replaced with a meet-and-greet. Timekeeper was all about looking back at ‘tomorrow,’ and then was kicked out in favor of a pack of somewhat funny monsters. Buzz Lightyear’s ride is oh-so-frustrating with all those little red dots everywhere. How’s a blogger to find her target? And worse, I don’t want to kill a toy! Oh, and then there’s the problem of lawnmower-engine cars at the Tomorrowland Speedway. Something about all those toxic fumes doesn’t seem futuristic, at least I hope it’s not our future.

With the TRON coaster on the way, it seems like a little more ‘tomorrow’ might be injected into Tomorrowland, but really it’s the ‘tomorrow’ of 1986. So, what is left of tomorrow in Tomorrowland? The linear induction system of the WEDWAY Peoplemover is one thing, but Space Mountain seems like 70’s science fiction to me (but it’s still my favorite Disney Coaster).

Rising 183 feet above the futuristic Tomorrowland scenery, Space Mountain has taken millions of Magic Kingdom Park guests on a thrilling roller coaster ride through the cosmos since it opened at Walt Disney World Resort in 1975. (Matt Stroshane, photographer)

And what of Space Mountain once the shiny new neighbor moves into town? Will it go down for a re-tracking like Disneyland’s? (It needs it). Will it begin hosting retheming like Hyperspace Mountain and Ghost Galaxy? We’ll see.

Will Tomorrowland ever stop playing catch-up with a tomorrow that insists on becoming yesterday? As future technology shrinks into a future that is increasingly difficult for theme park attractions to describe, Imagineers are rumored to be turning their attention toward a simpler, less problematic solution to ‘Tomorrow’land . . . re-name it.

“But they tried that with Discoveryland at Disneyland Paris!” I can hear you cry. They did. But, it’s still centered around a vision of the future. It was a vision from the 1800s, but it was still looking at tomorrow…and cool, cool submarines.

Changing the name of the land from Tomorrowland to Sci-Fi Land (or something along those lines) would make it much easier to be able to grow and change the land while fitting into its theme. Monsters are science fiction. Space Rangers, same. Aliens. Rockets to space. Um…having a little trouble with the Carousel of Progress, to be honest. But I don’t want to see it go. I’d like to see the original ending from the 1960s restored, Siamese cat and all.

TRON would fit in there as well, as one of Disney’s most beloved sci-fi stories. It would open up room for expansion without Imagineers having to think up an explanation as to why something not even distantly related to the land’s theme is being crammed in.

This would work well at Disneyland, too. Star Tours and Buzz Lightyear would coexist in peace.

A Tron-themed attraction will be added in a new area near Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom Park.

What do you think? Is it impossible for Disney to keep up with ‘Tomorrow’? Would a focus on Sci-Fi solve the problem? And what should happen with Space Mountain once the flashier TRON coaster opens just next door?

We address rumors here. We’ll make sure to always point out what IS a rumor, why it’s a rumor and encourage you to always take it with the grain of salt that makes rumors so delicious in the first place. Use it as a starting-off point for speculation and imagination, because, to be honest, rumors are fun. The author does not know if the rumors are true or not, only that they are rumors.
