Rushin’ River Outfitters is a highly themed but often overlooked retail location at Disney California Adventure. Join me as we explore this rustic shop nestled next to Grizzly River Rapids.
Rushin’ River Outfitters Location
You’ll find Rushin’ River Outfitters in the Grizzly Peak area of Disney California Adventure.
It’s located directly next to Grizzly River Run’s entrance and exit, but the throngs of guests in the area cause most guests to just keep on walking by.
Rushin’ River Outfitters Theming
Rushin’ River Outfitters excels at fitting the outdoorsy feel of Grizzly Peak. In fact, the store was featured in my list of best-themed shops of the Disneyland Resort!
A pair of bear statues greet you before you set foot (or paw) inside the store.
A bulletin board near one fo the doors houses all sorts National Parks paraphernalia, like maps, postcards, and patches.
Just above the front doors, a lengthy mural features several of California’s mountains, along with their elevations. You’ll note that Grizzly Peak is among the group with an elevation of 2001, the year Disney California Adventure first opened.
And just in case you need some encouragement to ride Grizzly River Run, the mural in the back of the store, with the subtle message to “Visit Bear Creek,” may do it.
Exclusive Items
There is a line of themed merchandise exclusive to this location. The majority of it is apparel, themed to Grizzly River Run. Smart move, given that the attraction is a water ride and those who attempt it are practically guaranteed to get soaked. You see a lot of wet folks buying nice new dry apparel.
Here are two of my favorites shirts:
Keeping with the National Parks theme, at the inside checkout counter, you’ll find patches bearing images of wild animals.
These grizzly bear plush puppets have been around since the opening of the park. You’ll find them on display towards the back of the store. They are relatively big and pretty dang fun. I actually own one or two myself. Much like Duffy the Disney Bear and his friends (Come back, Duffy! We miss you!), the paws of this grizzly have mickey head silhouettes on them.
Here is a close-up of the plush. Just look at that handsome devil!
There is also a little nook in the back of the store with one of those “Fill a baggie with X” bins. The “X” in question this time around are rocks and gems. The younger members of your expedition are most likely the ones who will get the most out of this. Or a polished rock collector, I suppose.
General Merchandise
There are also other options in case you are sopping wet but want more generic clothing to replace whatever you are currently wearing. The same shirts, sweatshirts, and socks that you find pretty much everywhere else in the resort are here, too. Plenty of socks available in this location.
There is apparel for kids, too, including socks and underwear.
And with the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail just around the bend, this kid-sized Wilderness Explorer tee is a good fit.
Several displays worth of Disney-themed, Havianas brand sandals (both adult and kids sizes) are also found at this location. Wet feet are a great excuse to buy a new pair of flip flops.
If you want to take more preemptive measures to avoid replacing your entire wardrobe, you can purchase a poncho. Options include high-end ones styled after Mickey or Minnie, or you can just get one of those clear ponchos sold behind the counter. They also have umbrellas, although they aren’t allowed on the ride.
Seasonal merchandise, like the 2019 or July 4th items, are also stocked.
In a glass display near the inside register are several watches available for purchase.
A carousel of trading pins is located toward the back of the store. They have a good mix of themes. I spotted classic Disney, Pixar, and even Star Wars pins here.
That grizzly bear isn’t the only furry friend found at Rushin’ River Outfitters. There is a canoe full of potential new friends. Additional ones are stuffed into nearby shelves.
Other Features of Rushin’ River Outfitters
Merchandise isn’t the only thing you’ll find here! At the kiosk before you enter the store, there is a pin trading board. It is sometimes behind the register, so ask a cast member if you wish to see it and trade for a treasure.
And in the summer months, you sometimes just need a drink. There is a beverage cooler towards the front of the store that stocks all sorts of bottled Coke products.
Just like in Frontierland, you can personalize different leather goods, like a bracelet or bag tag. Each one has different prints available and you can even add a decorative rivet or engraving.
Finally, pressed coin collectors should note that near the outside kiosk is a pressed quarter machine. All three designs are themed to the Disney-Pixar movie, Up. You can choose between Russell, Dug, or Carl’s floating house. My favorite is Dug. He is a good boy.
Have you paid a visit to Rushin’ River Outfitters? Do you agree that it’s one of Disney’s best themed shops? We’re just glad to see so much original and in-theme merchandise still stocked in this location. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
