Flying high above the clouds, transitioning through beautiful Californian locales, such as Yosemite, Malibu and Palm Springs… of course, we’re talking about Soarin’ Over California.

When you hear the serene Jerry Goldsmith score, where does your mind take you?

Growing up in Florida, I only ever experienced Soarin’ [Over California] at EPCOT. Soarin’ was a “gift” for Walt Disney World from Disneyland’s 50th Celebration.
As much as my family and I loved it, the attraction didn’t make too much sense in Florida’s Future World. Though it was located within the Land pavilion, which naturally feels reminiscent of an airport. Having never step foot in Disneyland or California, there was a disconnect. I always wondered why they didn’t create a Soarin’ Over Florida? The shores of Miami, Lake Placid, Walt Disney World, Orange Groves, white-as-snow sands of Clearwater Beach? Nice and flat… okay, maybe it’s not a great idea.
But Soarin’ Over the World fixed this. Literally soaring around the world’s iconic sites, finally welcoming you back into EPCOT with booming fireworks. Despite the crooked Eiffel Tower and pyramids, it’s absolutely a better fit for EPCOT’s World Showcase.

After riding Soarin’ Over the World in Disney California Adventure, I felt the opposite. There was a certain disconnect, similar to Florida circa 2005.
In an attempt to draw crowds over from Galaxy’s Edge, Disneyland announced the limited-time return of Soarin’ Over California! I was thrilled. I could finally experience the California version *in* California. Once that score started, the clouds cleared away for that stunning view of the Golden Gate bridge… And who can forget those classic scents of Orange Groves and the Malibu shores at sunset? To say I was emotional is an understatement.

The movie itself has aged surprisingly well. There are a few quibbles, but overall it looks great. If it was to stay even longer, I would be even more thrilled. I still favor this version over the heavy-CGI and crooked views from Around the World.
It’s not often that you can relive a defunct Disney attraction . . . and in its original, rightful place. And even rarer when the attraction lives up to your memories.
Originally planned to end June 30th, Disney has extended Soarin’ Over California in DCA through August 31st due to popular demand!
Additionally, there’s an Annual Passholder Bonus: “Annual Passholders can enjoy an extra hour at Soarin’ Over California after park closing every Thursday night, through the end of July. Blockout dates apply.”
What do you say? Should Disney turn this limited engagement into a permanent one?
Soarin’ to tower, we are ready for takeoff.
