Disney California Adventure has brought a new musical theater production to life in Paradise Park, “Tale of the Lion King”. The show retells the family favorite story of Simba and his ascent to kinghood through contemporary storytelling and music from the upcoming film.

The story is performed by the new 18-member group, “Storytellers of the Pride Lands”. The lead narrator, Mwongozo (which means “Guide” in Swahili), weaves the legend of Simba and Scar’s power struggle for the throne, and the life lessons from Timon and Pumba through music and dance.

The costumes of the cast are minimal, but entirely effective and creative.

This original adaptation follows the familiar storyline from the 1994 movie. And it premiered in celebration of the remake which releases July 19. Although this show only has songs from the movie, it feels fresh and tells the tale in a tidy 25 minutes.

It’s always nice to see new entertainment in the park and we really enjoyed the energy, color, humor and heart of this production. This offering should help placate Passholders blocked from Disneyland. It joins Mickey’s PhilharMagic and Soarin’ Over California as a recent addition to the DCA roster for the summer.

“Tale of the Lion King” will have a limited summer run, and will be performed multiple times per day at the Palisades Stage (in Paradise Park).

Now, spoiler alert, here’s a couple of videos from yesterday’s debut. One is an overview from further back in the stadium and the other is our up-close live video from Facebook:

And here’s the trailer for the upcoming film for the 12 of you who haven’t seen it:

What do you think of “Tale of the Lion King”? Does it make you want to rewatch the original, or inspire you to see the remake? Will the show be enough to help keep blocked out Passholders interested in the parks for the next few summer months?
