The novelty of mystery bags and boxes are not new to Disney merchandise. Blind box pins and Vinylmations (may they rest in peace) have been seen in the Parks for years. But as a plush toy lover, I had wished that my favorite medium was more represented. Well, my wish has been answered with Disney’s Wishables line.

Product Release Party!

The first wave of Wishables launched on April 10 at a Product Release event at Downtown Disney’s World of Disney store. A similar event was also held at Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs.

A Word about Wishables

Before we discuss the current Wishables available, let’s talk for a moment about the plushes themselves. Their most identifying trait is their star-shaped pupils, as if they are wishing on an evening star reflecting in their eyes. This is seen on every one of the Wishables plushes. Next, is the fabric. It has a silky feel with a little stretch to it, making it extra-fun to squish. The last thing I noticed was that they are not filled with bean bag pellets, it’s all polyester fiberfill. That is not necessarily a bad thing, just not what I had anticipated.

The First Wave

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s see what you can buy now at Disney Parks as well as at ShopDisney. For your convenience, we have added shopping links to this article. Note that MiceChat does not make any money from you clicking these links. We just added them to make things easy for you.

First up are the Open Edition Wishables. There are currently three: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Stitch. These guys are sitting out in the open; no need to go hunting through mystery bags.

It should be noted that all Wishables, regardless of whether they are Open Edition, in a mystery bag, or a chaser, cost the same price: $9.99 each.

Next up are the Limited Release series. These consist of a themed mystery bag with four plush possibilities along with a chaser that you can grab off the shelf. No guessing required.

First is the Wishables Parks Food Series. In the mystery bag, you have a chance of getting a Mickey’s Premium Ice Cream bar, an Aloha Swirl, a Mickey’s Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream Sandwich, or a Strawberry Ice Pop. The chaser for this series is an Ice Cream Cone.

Next is the Pirates of the Caribbean Attraction series. Inside the mystery bag is either Jack Sparrow, the Skeleton Helmsman, the Pirate Parrot, or Redd. The chaser here is the Dog with Keys.

Lastly is the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage series. The mystery bag could contain either Dory, Bruce, the N.E.M.O Submarine, or Darla. This series’ chaser is Nemo himself.

Unboxing (Un-bagging?)

One of the interesting features of Wishables is that because the mystery plushes are in bags rather than boxes so you can feel around to see if your desired character is inside. It’s an interesting concept that is actually encouraged, judging by the “Squeeze Me!!” on the packaging. I generally like the idea but am slightly concerned that the plushes might get damaged in the process by overly-vigorous collectors.

During the Product Release event, I purchased two mystery bags, a Finding Nemo one and a Pirates one. I was aiming for Bruce and the Pirate Parrot and did feel around (albeit as gently as possible) to hopefully increase my chances.

Lo and behold, I struck fishy gold with my first mystery bag and managed to get Bruce! I was pretty thrilled.

Figuring out which character was which by feel was definitely harder on the Pirates series because the characters share a similar body shape. I tried to feel around for a captain’s hat and cross my fingers.

In the end, I struck out and got Redd instead of the Pirate Parrot. This was a bummer on several levels. There is the basic problem of “I was trying to get a different character” but also, upon inspection, Redd has some quality issues. There is a large, stray thread under her chin and whatever attaches her belt to her dress (I presume glue, going by the feel) is not doing a great job.

I think that with the more complex character designs, more care needs to be taken by the manufacturer in inspecting the pieces before shipping. Bruce was just fine, but his design was also much simpler in comparison. Seeing designs just as intricate as Redd’s in the future would great . . . unless they end up with quality issues that is.

Have you purchased any Wishables? Which ones did you get? And which themes or attractions would you like to see as a Wishables series?
