EPCOT’s New Era: Celebrating Walt, Luminous Fireworks, and Enchanting Gardens!

Do you hear that? The applause for the completed construction from the middle of EPCOT’s Future Wo– I mean, World Celebration! Finally, after years of construction walls and alternate pathways throughout the front of the park, a brand new area, World Celebration Gardens, including Dreamer’s Point and the Walt the Dreamer statue, opened up yesterday, December 5th (Walt’s Birthday!). A brand new fireworks show, Luminous: The Celebration of Us, also debuted. A huge update for EPCOT’s transformation… let’s take a look!

World Celebration Gardens

The construction walls are finally gone, exposing a green new world…

The new World Celebration Gardens are laid out as five different areas: Dreamers Point, where the Walt the Dreamer statue is, with the other four areas taking inspiration from the part of EPCOT they transition into: World Nature, Connections Eatery & Cafe, Creations Shop, and CommuniCore Hall & Plaza (which opens in 2024).

Within Dreamer’s Point, a new statue entitled Walt the Dreamer, represents Walt later in his life when he was dreaming up the overall Florida Project and the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. 

Notice the pattern behind Mr. Disney; Imagineers gathered design inspiration from Walt’s original plans for E.P.C.O.T.

Surrounding World Celebration Gardens are Creations Shop, Club Cool, Connections Cafe and Eatery, and a newly reimagined festival area opening in 2024 which will be home to rotating events. Here’s a look into World Celebration Gardens:

An all-new original background music loop plays here, created by Pinar Toprak (who also composed the score for the park’s newest fireworks show, Luminous, see more about that below!)

The new areas offer additional seating and shade, providing more space for you to take a break or enjoy your festival food selections!

As with any Disney park at night, the space completely transforms after dark with a new dynamic lighting package. Additionally, you’ll notice some of the area’s lighting is synchronized with Spaceship Earth’s points of light (the magical light shows that transform the globe at night).

Remember those fiber-optic pavement areas of the old Future World? The new gardens are filled with light-up pavement. The EPCOT logo featured in the new center garden illuminates at night and changes colors. There’s also some light-up LED pavement near the Walt the Dreamer statue. 

Luminous: The Symphony of Us

EPCOT’s new fireworks spectacular was designed, once again, to bring us all together around World Showcase Lagoon. The large Harmonious barges which obstructed the lagoon’s view are long gone. Smaller show barges that can move in and out of the lagoon can be seen here:

A Mother Nature narration tells the story of life throughout the show. With no screens or projections, just textural fireworks, lasers, and fountains, you’re able to see yourself and apply your own story to the show, feeling it all a bit more. 

The show begins with voices from each World Showcase pavilion welcoming guests, with a firework blasting from each area. Listen carefully for a small nod to Walt here, too!

From there, the show takes you into the story of life, beginning with an original song titled Heartbeat Symphony, leading into childhood, parenthood, friendships, falling in love, encountering challenges, loss and grief, and encouraging all to never give up, sing out so others can hear you, you’re never alone, before the finale moment.

Spaceship Earth is dark before illuminating during key moments halfway through show, adding another layer to the visuals. This is the view from Italy:

Luminous features two new original songs, Heartbeat Symphony and Beating of Our Hearts, along with Disney Songbook selections including You’ll Be in My Heart, You’ve Got a Friend in Me, Proud Corazón, So Close, See the Light, Into the Unknown, as well as a medley of When She Loved Me and Remember Me; renditions that will truly tug at your heartstrings. The show directors worked with many artists and singers to bring the show to life, including composer Pinar Toprak, Katherine McPhee, and singer/songwriter Sheléa.

Luminous feels like a combination of previous shows, Harmonious and Illuminations: Reflections of Earth. While many feel nothing may ever come close to Illuminations, given its long show run time, story, and iconic score, Luminous is definitely an improvement over EPCOT Forever, doesn’t require large lagoon barges, and offers a genuine connection to (and between) guests. Since there are no video screens, any spot around World Showcase offers a great view. Music plays a critical role when telling this tale, and Disney knows how to tell a story!
