San Fransokyo Square opens today (August 31, 2023). Based on the city from Disney Animation’s Big Hero 6, the area is a retheme of Disney California Adventure’s Pacific Wharf dining area.  The area includes a character meet and greet for Baymax and friends, refreshed theme throughout the land, new menus in the restaurants, and even a shop.

As we’ve been sharing on MiceChat, the big transformation was conducted while the land remained open to guests. As a result, as each restaurant was transformed, the new menus became available to visitors.

LIVE: San Fransokyo Square Opens

We are live at the grand opening of Disneyland Resorts newest land. Join us for a look at Baymax, new restaurants, shop, and much more!

About San Fransokyo Square

Like the film, the vibe of San Fransokyo is San Francisco meets Tokyo. But the Imagineers have created an elaborate backstory for the area to help explain why this version of Big Hero 6 is in a fishing/canning area instead of in the big city.

As the Imagineers explain it:

“The tech industry began to emerge and the local fishing trade fell on hard times, entrepreneurs came together to reinvent the seaside canneries into a vibrant, multicultural district of neighborhood restaurants and small businesses where you’ll be able to eat and shop.”

Sounds a lot like San Francisco’s current Fisherman’s Wharf.

The old bridge into Pacific Wharf has been augmented with new golden towers and is now known as the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge. Nearby buildings sport wind turbines, hinting at the technological upgrades the area has received since its days as a canning/fishing hub.

Baymax Meet and Greet

On the south side of the land, where the beer cart was located, Baymax and friends meet with guests outside a converted warehouse.

We had the opportunity to spend some time with the heroes at a recent press event and take photos.

Disneyland also shared this teaser video on their Instagram account.

A large queue has been set up for meet-and-greets.

San Fransokyo Makers Market

A new shop has been carved out under the Cucina Cucamonga roof nearest the Baymax meetup. The decor includes nods to Hiro’s defeated, former opponents from his robot battling days. Aside from the flags with the different robotic combatants hanging above the entrance, the shelves are labeled as the property of the different robots’ owners, and above the shelves are bundles of wires and the like.

The majority of the merchandise sold here can be found at other parts of the resort, such as the different styles of Baymax plushes, Disney Munchlings merchandise, and Avengers Campus Spider-Bots. But there are a few unique pieces as well. Here’s a glimpse at the offerings.

Cucina Cucamonga

Cucina Cucamonga has kept its name and menu. It received only a Mexican street corn and a new drink for its San Fransokyo transformation.

Rita’s Baja Blenders becomes Rita’s Turbine Blenders

Rita’s cocktail stand got a slight name update on July 26th. The new name is Rita’s Turbine Blenders. The name gives reference to the large koi windsock-shaped wind turbines which power the land. The new icon has not yet been installed, but you can see the new name:

Ghirardelli

While it initially seemed that the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain would remain untouched for the most part (concept ard did show a wind turbine on the building’s roof), many little changes have been made. The soda fountain’s whimsical moving mural has been updated to incorporate imagery to place it within San Fransokyo, the signage has been updated, and a turbine has been placed on the roof. The menu remains the same.

As you can see, Disney has added the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge in the background of one portion of the mural. Other references include paper lanterns and cherry blossoms in places, and words written in Japanese Katakana are also present.

San Fransokyo Bread Cart

If you’ve been waiting patiently for a Baymax bread ever since it was announced, you’ll find the sourdough bread cart in a new location. Instead of its previous spot at the exit of the Boudin Bread Tour, you’ll find it at the entry to the bakery tour across from Cars Land.

Are You Satisfied With Your Care?

The Pacific Wharf was a DCA 1.0 holdover and was a simple food court area with no Disney tie-ins. The San Fransokyo overlay has added character themes and new menu items, but has retained some of the area’s previous cannery look. It merges what was there before with Big Hero 6 details. In addition to restaurants, San Fransokyo Square has added character meet and greets and a new shop. What are your thoughts on San Fransokyo Square?
