If you’ve ever been to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you have seen the Tree of Life. It’s the symbol of the park— the centerpiece of Discovery Island and the park itself. But what do you know about it? With so much to see, we figured that we should take an in-depth look at this extraordinary icon. Grab some binoculars, and let’s get started!
The History of the Tree of Life
The Tree of Life has been the centerpiece of Animal Kingdom park since its opening day on April 22, 1998. Construction took 12-months. The tree is 147 feet tall, 50 feet wide at its base, and more than 100,000 leaves cover its 8,000+ branches.
In February 2015, the Tree of Life grew, adding roots around its base.
In 2016, Tree of Life started to come to life at night with Tree of Life Awakenings. Projecting images of animals onto the tree, they come to life. Special shows have been added over time, including animals inspired by The Lion King and a Holiday addition.
Around the Tree of Life
Around the edge of the Tree of Life are real live animals such as otters, flamingos, and other critters.
It’s Tough To Be A Bug
The Animal Kingdom Tree is home to some pretty famous bugs. In fact, the It’s Tough to be a Bug show is located inside the base of the tree.
While you wait in line, you will come across many carvings in the root system of the tree.
You may even come across a dinosaur.
Then there is the tree itself, filled with carvings. In all, there are over 300 carvings of animals inscribed in the tree. The animals featured on the Tree of Life are incredibly varied, including whales, octopi, lions, crocodiles, and dinosaurs. It really is quite a remarkable sight to take in.
Of course, the Tree of Life wouldn’t be complete without at least one Hidden Mickey. Can you find it?
The Tree of Life is a very popular spot to take pictures. Is there a particular angle you like to take pictures from to showcase your favorite animal carvings?
