For the first time ever, The original The Muppet Show is heading to Disney+. The comedy variety series that starred Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and the Swedish Chef, will begin streaming Friday, Feb. 19. When the show premieres, it will be the first time that seasons 4 and 5 will be available to fans.

Premiering in 1976, the prime-time series was presented as a variety show, which allowed the puppeteers to feature recurring and new characters in sketch comedy and musical numbers interspersed with plotlines taking place backstage at the Muppet theater.

A Plethora of Celebrity Guests

The series featured A-list celebrity hosts, including Steve Martin, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Vincent Price, Julie Andrews, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Gene Kelly, and Mark Hamill. It should be noted that during the original run of the series, no guest star ever appeared twice on the show.

“It’s going to be great to welcome back longtime fans, and to give a new generation of fans a chance to see how we got our start, how Miss Piggy became a star and so much more,” said Kermit the Frog. “Today, I’m proud to say: ‘It’s time to play the music, light the lights and meet the Muppets on Disney Plus tonight!’ And as for Statler and Waldorf, the two old guys in the balcony, I can only add: ‘Sorry, guys, but….here we go again.”

In addition to all five seasons of The Muppet Show, other Muppets titles like Muppet Treasure Island will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next month, and new hits like Muppets Now, will also be streaming on Disney+.

The Muppet Show and 60 Minutes

In 1979, Morley Safer and the crew of 60 Minutes visited the set of the show during its heyday to discuss the craft of muppetry with the show’s talent. The segment was one of the first glimpses the public had of the muppeteers, which included rare behind-the-scenes footage of an episode being filmed with guest host Raquel Welch.
