“The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” is an all-new series inspired by the classic comedy of the Mickey Mouse shorts from the 1920s meshed with contemporary design elements. The series will also include stories inspired by famous landmarks within the Disney parks and cameos by classic Disney heritage characters.

Disney Television Animation is producing “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” with Emmy Award-winning artist and director Paul Rudish (co-creator of Cartoon Network’s television series “Sym-Bionic Titan”) serving as executive producer and supervising director. Christopher Willis, the Emmy Award-winning composer of the “Mickey Mouse” shorts, is also on board.

Modern Mickey

“The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” is a spiritual successor to the popular “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts which premiered on Disney Channel in 2013 and ran for five seasons. Those shorts included the “rubber-hose” cartoon style for stylized animation and plenty of squash and stretch. During its original run, the “Mickey Mouse” series won seven Primetime Emmy Awards, two Daytime Emmy Awards and twenty-one Annie Awards. The new series reimagines Mickey once again for modern audiences.

The “Mickey Mouse” shorts were the inspiration for the new trackless attraction, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which features Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Donald and the rest of the series’ cast. The attraction is open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort, and will be making its West Coast debut in Mickey’s Toon Town at Disneyland in 2023. All five seasons of “Disney Mickey Mouse” are currently available on Disney+.

Ward Kimball and The Mouse Factory

“The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” isn’t the first time Disney has retooled Mickey Mouse for a television audience. Earlier this summer, MiceChat reported a little-known series that was created by Ward Kimball, one of Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men.

During the 1972 TV season, Kimball lent his comic sensibilities to the live-action/animated anthology series called “The Mouse Factory,” a television show produced by Walt Disney Productions.
