Streetwear Becomes Frozen at One Disney Store

Nick Verreos from Project Runway and Co-Chairman of FIDM David Paul took a Journey into the Unknown with a fashionable Disney collaboration. To celebrate the release of Frozen 2, Nick Verreos, David Paul and FIDM Alumni designers Paul Hernandez and Tomy Huang created five luxury streetwear looks incorporating the Spirit Elements from Frozen 2 – Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

Disney unveiled two male and two female garments along with an elaborate Elsa design. The Spirit Elements are all streetwear looks that capture the classical elements of Fire, Water, Air and Earth. These aren’t items for sale, this is an art installation.

The Elsa-inspired gown is complete with an elegant draping of light celadon fabric and glittering, hand-beaded crystals.

“This opportunity gave me complete freedom to explore a different side of design. It was a challenge to work with fabrics I don’t usually use,” explained designer Paul Hernandez. Paul described the creative process of working with Disney and how inspirational it was. Disney encouraged Paul to broaden his thinking and bring animation into the real world. His Fire design was sparked by the intensity and elegance of flame.

Paul’s Earth design was inspired by the Earth Giants from the film and was represented by oversized asymmetrical draping and recycled materials.

Tomy Huang certainly took his creations to the next level. He was moved by the water element and the mane of Elsa’s Nokk to add bold, flowing tassels to his design. He explained that the blue leather fabrics were not easy to work with in his short 2-3 week design process with Disney, but that it gave the desired effect of fluidity combined with the tassles.

Tomy’s wind design was just as adventurous and it embodied both the invisibility of wind and the “physical form” of Gale. His design gives the perfect “pop” of fluorescent orange to catch the eye of shoppers walking by.
