June gloom takes on new meaning this week as Disneyland’s Main Street Cinema becomes a temporary (?) shop. But it’s not all bad news, three of Tomorrowland’s top attractions turned 60 years old on Friday. Hard to believe they are all still operating and known the world over. Galaxy’s Edge is still settling in, but Disney has just under two weeks left to get ready for Star Wars-geddon, when reservations are no longer required.

Matterhorn, Monorail and Subs 60th

Friday the 14th was the 60th anniversary for three classic Disneyland attractions: The Monorail, The Submarine Voyage and the Matterhorn. I popped into the park at opening to ride all three:

A small photo op was set up next to the Matterhorn Fastpass distribution.

The Matterhorn has seen some changes over the years. The addition of tandem bobsleds, letting the Abominable Snowmen loose in new ice caves, and most recently the creation of a new queue and Fastpass.

, Disneyland Update – Red, White and Boooooo , Disneyland Update – Red, White and BooooooWhile painful to ride, the Matterhorn looks great for a 60 year old attraction.

Across the way, the Subs aren’t in as great of shape. Projections in the caves are dim and in some cases out of focus. and the bodies of the subs are rusting away. But, overall, this is still a unique attraction which delivers a spot of liquid magic in an expanse of concrete.

A pair of limited edition pins celebrated the anniversary. One was open to all, the the other was for passholders.

Main Street Cinema Crime Scene

A disturbing test is being conducted in the Main Street Cinema. For now, the turnstiles have been removed and merchandise tables have been added. If the test is a success, you can expected to see another piece of Disneyland history fade away.

, Disneyland Update – Red, White and Boooooo

A hastily set up cocktail table displays merchandise, while a cardboard sign on an easel points guests to take a look at what’s new . . . only its the same old merchandise you can find everywhere throughout the resort.

Tilly does not appear to be happy about this.

Turnstyles have been removed.

We have an idea . . . rather than adding merchandise racks to this space, add chairs and benches and allow guests a restful and air-conditioned spot to escape the summer heat.

, Disneyland Update – Red, White and Boooooo

What are your thoughts on the Main Street Cinema? While rarely busy, should Disney turn it into a shop or use the opportunity to make the space more comfortable for guests to sit and enjoy the films?

Perhaps even adding the award-winning “Get a Horse” 3D film to the closed screen.

Still Pleasant . . .

Those non-existent crowds we’ve shared for the last couple of weeks are no more. Traffic is picking up! But, it’s still rather nice. Waits of 45 minutes for the major E-Tickets and 5 to 20 minutes for the smaller rides isn’t bad.

, Disneyland Update – Red, White and Boooooo
At first glance, it looked busy. But . . .
, Disneyland Update – Red, White and Boooooo
It really wasn’t bad at all.

Saturday noon times above and dinner time below:

Pirate’s of the Caribbean is always a good barometer of how crowded the park is. . .

No one on the bridge and empty switchback outside of the courtyard. That’s the best you can hope for in summertime.

Cast Admission Unblocked

We know the crowd levels are below what was expected because Disney has suddenly unblocked Castmember admission to Disneyland.

Marvel Land Progress

With Star Wars land open, the next big new land will be Marvel in Disney California Adventure.

Vertical construction around the old Bug’s Life Theater:

Disney is now seeking aerialists for the new land. We’d love to see some web-slingers bounding from building to building when this land opens.

However, in the old Bug’s Land, it’s still mostly just dirt.

Emotional Whirlwind

Pixar Pier is about to get a new (old) attraction. The Emotional Whirlwind has been testing. It won’t be long now.

Jolly Holiday New Sweets

Every once in a while, I like to treat myself to a pastry from Jolly Holiday (who am I kidding, I always like to treat myself with a pastry). Lots of new things here. Goofy macaron, brownies, bundt cakes, poundcake cupcake, key lime pie, cheesecake, and the return of the Dolewhip Doughnut.

The holy grail of doughnuts is back. The Pineapple doughnut sure does look like a dole whip, and how about that cute paper umbrella?!

The Goofy themed Cookies and Cream macaron are very sweet, but delicious.

There’s a lot of pineapple right now. The pineapple upside down bundt cake is very moist and flavorful.

These are also good, but we wish the marshmallow was a little more melted on top.

I didn’t try the pound cake cupcake, but it looks promising. Any of you get a chance to try this?

Bo Peep is featured as well. It’s all about the “Action Staff.”

Just remember the costume policy. You can’t wear the long robes in the park.

Just a warning, these robes may seem like a fun item to wear to Galaxy’s Edge, but they violate the park’s own costume rules.

Pixar Pals Parking & Bridge

The new pedestrian bridge, which stretches from the parking structure toward Downtown Disney, was installed overnight on Friday.  The structure itself looks just about done. The lighting, directional signs, digital parking indicators and landscaping are all ready to go.

Well folks, we’d love to hear your thoughts below. Is turning the Main Street Cinema into another shop a good idea? How much longer can attractions like the Monorail and Submarines last?
